Warren and Lina are a husband and wife team of anthropologists. They are in a remote desert-location studying a hostile group of radicals who have made a bitter life for themselves in an extremely harsh environment. On the surface, Lina is tired of living Warren's dream of grassroots anthropology and wants to go home. Deep down, she feels a connection to these people that she would rather not explore. The couple lie beside each other in their sleeping bags.
LINA
We shouldn’t be here.
No response.
LINA
We shouldn’t be here.
Warren closes the journal.
WARREN
And where should we be?
(pause)
Back in the cities? I’m tired of learning from thirty year old books.
What we saw today… It was amazing.
LINA
That’s just the thing. It was amazing, it awoke something in me…
I’m worried I won’t ever want to go back. I’m worried…
these people fascinate me.
WARREN
Exactly! Yes, exactly! They fascinate me to. It’s why we should go back,
eventually. We’ll have so much to tell when we return. My journal’s
nearly filled--
LINA
Warren! Listen to me. You're right, these people are inspiring… But, I’m
worried about us being here, getting to them. Becoming a part of their tribes.
Maybe even influencing them in ways, they aren’t prepared for. Let’s
just go home.
WARREN
We’ve done good so far haven’t we? We’ve learned so much by
observing from the outside.
LINA
We killed one of their tribesmen. I know you enjoy this, but I’m sorry
Warren, I’m going home.
WARREN
I’ll help you pack in the morning. You can take the car.
