Greenhorn writer, Blake Nilssen (Matt Pevic), knows that there is only one editor who can publish the story that has so drastically altered his life. Accomplished editor and writer Chaz Matthews (Chris Cullen) wants nothing to do with him. But Blake will not relent until Chaz reads the unfinished novel that he believes can somehow heal them both.
Witness two men, drawn by their own need for recognition, as each takes full advantage of the other, to cure themselves and to come Clean.
ABOUT THE FILM
Blofli Pictures second short film was created as a side project when the BloFli boys were bogged down by costuming constraints for their period drama, The Good Brother. Written, directed, edited and starring the BloFli brothers, Clean was written as they filmed the movie. An ambitious project, involving over 20 different locations, the process would involve the two men, with their cast and crew, shooting on the weekends and editing during late weeknights.
The story was conceived based on a desire to feature three things: a car chase; a fight scene; and a scene involving a motley crew of long-shore men tossing horseshoes below the cliffs of San Pedro. If youve seen Clean, you know that, well at least the horseshoes survived the final cut.
The half-hour movie was completed in less than six months. It was shot on two Sony VX2000s and edited on Final Cut Pro 2.0. Every dialogue scene used a two-camera set-up, which made filmmaking go much faster and smoother, both on location and in the editing bay.
Since Chris and Matt are in every shot of Clean (something they want to avoid in the future), they were frequently faced with the problem of both directing and acting at the same time. Luckily, they had talented cameramen, but they still felt stretched by the two tasks. So much so, that for their next project, Swatura, theyve decided to concentrate on directing.
Fans of Clean just cant say enough about its music. The movie features two different artists providing background songs and scoring. BloFli was lucky to wrangle a talented singer-songwriter from Seattle, Jill Cohn, into lending her time and music for the soundtrack. And, a little bit of fate led them to Wes Smith (meeting him by chance at a local Cineplex) who had an additional role in scoring the film.
Then, on May 11, 2002, another bit of fortune fell into BloFlis laps. The brothers were given the opportunity to screen their movie at Miramax LA. It was a great way for the cast and crew to see the film on the big screen in a real movie theater. The film was well received and is now being shopped around the festival circuit.
Taking full advantage of Apple Computers DVD-writing software, Clean has been made available on DVD for purchase. Also, to find a more detailed, behind-the-scenes, look at the making of the movie, go to our Clean photo page.
